Google Phone Takes On iPhone?

Filed under: Cell Phones — timwang @ 01:04:30 am

Just 3 months before the iPhone hit the market, I hear this rumors on the up-coming Google Phone, Code name “Switch”. The rumors indicates the search engine giant Google is secretly working with Samsung on a new product, a Google Cell Phone. Some truth in the rumors:
- Google acquired Reqwireless Inc. back in July 2005, a company makes Web browser and e-mail software for wireless devices.
- Google acquired Skia, a small company who produced SGL, a portable graphics engine capable of rendering state-of-the-art 2D graphics on low-end devices such as mobile phones. This is somewhat similar to Adobe Flash Lite.
- Google acquired Android who's founder is Andy Rubin, someone with a broad knowledge in mobile devices.

I have always been suspecting Google will eventually move into the mobile devices industry. My old posting “Google GPS” predicted there are just million of reasons for Google to push their Google Map advertisment contents on a mobile device, something may have a built-in GPS chips. Here are some of the “descriptions” of this new Google Phone:
1.Looks like the “blackberry” phones;
2.Linux operating system using C++ core w/ OS bootstrap
3.Support Java applications
4.Build-in GPS chip
5.Supports VoIP
6.Slick 2D Vector Graphic rendering engine

There is even a “leaked” image of this mystery “Google Phone”! Read this old Business Week article from 2005, judge it yourself...

Filed under: Cell Phones — timwang @ 02:40:33 am

KTF in Korea has rolled out the smallest cell phones on the market today - mini EV-K130. The size of the cell phone is close to a regular lip stick (82x37x16.9mm) and the weight is only 73.5g! However, the little phone has a 1.3 megapixel camera and 165MB on-board memory and can be used as a MP3 player!

Went to the legendary "Cell Phone Mall" today and could not resist, bought the brand new Motorola PDA/Media/Cell Phone - A780. Love the phone, some worth to mention features: 1.3 megapixel camera with full-screen viewfinder; Video record/playback and streamed video* playback; MP3 player supporting MIDI/WAV/AMR/WMA, Real and AAC files; Embedded Bluetooth wireless technology; Viewer for PDF and Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents; Java (J2ME) MIDP 2.0 with 3D Graphics; Internet access via WAP 2.0, WML, xHTML, HTML (Opera7). Going back to the mall tomorrow to get a 256 MB flash card and a bluetooth ear plug then I will be all set... What else do I need? maybe a portable data projector based on my watch... :)

Sorry for lack of blog lately, just too much to write and don't know where to start...
