Error: Right cartridge incorrect. Printer Manufacturers' trap?!

Filed under: Hardware, Printer — timwang @ 07:01:45 pm

I purchased a HP color inkjet printer over a year ago. It is one of the all-in-one models. I barely used it for printing, mainly for scanning and ocassionaly for photo copying. Yesterday, I turned it on and tried to print something, it gave me an error message: "Error: Right cartridge incorrect." After a few reboot of the printer, the message doesn't go away, and it blocks all printing and photo-copying tasks. I then called HP support line and they were going to charge me $30 for the support call but I told them I can spend extra $20 to buy another printer, and the support staff paused for a few second and suggested me TO DO SO! Anyway, I then tried to clean the printer from inside out, Air-brushed every inch of the machine, cotton cleaned (with alcohol) the cartridge connecting heads and electronic clips. But nothing helped. I then turned to the Internet...

Surprisingly, many others have had the same experience as me and they have come to some shocking conclusion after hours of research and discussion with the printer manufacturers:

Many newer HP Printers internally keep track of your cartridges by a serial number embedded into the cartridge. When it's low, the printer remembers. This is entirely done within the printer itself, and not the printer software. Some printers EXPIRE the cartridges after 18 months according to the installation date even it is not empty.

I find this is outrageous, it's like buy a pen and it won't let you use it after 1 month even the ink is still half full?! If this is true, there should some serious polices to prevent the manufacturers from doing so. An alternative solution I have found so far is:

Most HP printers will only keep 2 cartridges in memory, so if you have 2 extra cartridges, (even empty ones) you could cycle them through to reset the printers memory, and reset the ink level to full. Basically, even though you've refilled your cartridge, the printers has the cartridge's serial number stored in memory. This will reset it.

I will give this a try, but it still needs me to go out and purchase a brand new HP #56 black cartridge while the original one is not empty yet... If you have any experiences like this, please share it with me.

I just had the same problem on a black (56) cartridge that is well less than a year old. I saw ink leakage underneath the flexwire, and after blotting the ink jets sufficently to remove the leakage, the cartright now works fine!

I have had the same problem, what I did was buying a new cartridge HP #56 and the problem is fixed. This is clearly a cartridge empty issue. The only tricky part is sometime the printer gives wrong judgement RE: expiration date exceed the ink usage.

I had the same problem, and tried everything including buying an expensive refill kit. Then found out about this memmory thingy. Bought a discounted HP No. 56 cartridge, and plugged it in, reset the memmory, then put back the unfinished original cartrdge, everything worked.

well a bought psc 1410 and bought a cartrige 56 which has 19 millilitres of ink and which work fine with other psc printers but surprissingly you must buy a new cartrige number 21 for this new printer which has just 5 millilitres of ink and cost looks and works the same. But you can print 4 times less. I think that this is really against any moral and responsible bussiness. I will not buy another HP product again.

Hp 2170 All In One. Had the problem. Put new color and black/white. printed test page. following day, "remove both cartridges" I thought it was not a cartridge problem (until I got here) but some internal connection. Took the whole thing apart, reset connections hoping to make better contact. Nope, didn't work. Now I find it's a memory thing. I'll never buy a Hewlett Packard printer, that is for sure.

Think about a HP ink cartridge that has a warranty. Bad ink cartridge, color bad, light ink which appears watery, what-ever, they give you another one. That's the way a warranty works. You buy a recycled ink cartridge, with no HP warranty. It may work momentarily, but then you get these same messages, remove cartridge. Why should my printer shut down after purchasing a recycled ink cartridge? But then if you buy an HP ink cartridge, your printer is up and running again. Or until that time HP thinks you have printed long enough, even if you have plenty of ink. HP forces you, according to HP predetermined usage, in order for your printer to work, to buy their ink cartridges, or HP will shut your printer down. Don't focus on the ink cartridge, focus on the fact HP stops your printer from working, because of some silly game they are playing of cheating customers before the ink runs out, or wrong ink standards, or what-ever. I say, go ahead send these stupid messages, but don't stop my printer from working. This is anti-competitive, and in violation of anti-trust laws.

Hewlett Packard recycles their ink cartridges by promoting that HP cartridges be returned for recycling, using a self addressed, stamped envelope. Allowing HP, through their “refurbishing and reselling” effort to conserve resources, using the various recycling facilities of manufacturers around the world contracted by HP. Thus, the mere fact that there also are other recyclers available to refurbish, and recycle ink cartridges, but except for lower cost, and the free choice of the consumer, HP has restricted the consumer the full use, and the operation of HP printers.

Smith and Roberson’s Business Law, ninth edition. West Publishing. Chapter 43; ANTITRUST.
“Characterizing a type of restraint as per se illegal therefore has a significant effect on the prosecution of an antitrust suit. In such a case, the plaintiff need only show that the type of restraint occurred, she does not need to prove that the restraint limited competition.....Tying arrangements. A tying arrangement occurs when the seller of a product, service, or intangible (the "tying" product) conditions its sale on the buyers purchasing a second product, service, or intangible (the "tied" product) from the seller....Because tying arrangements limit buyers' freedom of choice and may exclude competitors, the law closely scrutinizes such agreements.”

Hewlett Packard has, unbeknownst to customers who purchased HP printers (tying product), tied as a condition, the purchase of new HP ink cartridges (tied product), or HP recycled ink cartridges, through the use illegal anti-competitive consumer practices.

Again, I say Hewlett Packard, play your silly games by cheating on ink cost, and supplies. I say go ahead! But don’t stop me from the use of my printer.

OK, I just went through this with a Dell all-in-one 962 only it wasn't 18 months, it was 4!. Both cartridges gave the 'Incorrect Cartridge' "Error" and expired simultaneoulsy. Cooincidence? I don't think so. I promptly contacted Dell, and they sent me new cartridges (they were both prectically full). But they offered no explaination and skirted my questions about firmware. I suspect these printers are manufactured by HP. In any case, I'm pissed. What happens when my warranty runs out; I have to pay for new cartridges every 4 months regardless of the condition/capacity? And how about the other functions being locked out by the same scheme?

If anyone DOES file a class action on this one, I'll be in line with the rest of you. This practice must be stopped.

this printer is realyy getting on my damn nerves.

those cartridges are real wallet-breakers, and I need to use a lot of ink for printing out hardcopies of computer code, and it's not in my budget to buy cartridges all the time!

I was forced to fall back onto these HP printers when my Epson printer stopped working. That Epson was wonderful! Beautiful, refillable, pure bliss! Why can't HP's be like that? Because the company makes its profits selling the cartridges! Okay, ahem, sorry for that brain fart, but I had to get that out of the way. I'll have to try the tricks to use the same cartridge until I get a couple of fins to buy either a replacement Epson or the extra cartridges to do the swap trick.

I have a Dell 962 All In One printer that I have used to printed MAYBE 30 to 40 pages in the two months! that I have had the printer and got the right cartridge empty message. Dell wanted to charge me $39 to answer my question. I had a feeling if I did some internet searching, I would find the answer. Not what I expected. This is unreal. They make a good product but then have to come up with ways to make the consumables not break so they have repeat business.

ink and ink refill kit sellers have discovered a few ways to override the chip in the cartridges.this typically involves putting some scotch tape over a few of the cartridges electrical contacts. Check their websites. Also be aware that there is a watch battery in your printer which powers the "expiration cycle" function on your cartridges. If this battery is removed, any cartridge will work. Still the HP ink cartridge thing, I have PSC2510, the color ink ran out, refilled them with the refill kit, did all the tricks, it is fine now as the ink level, printer software does see the ink level is full... but when print, only black and blue color came out, yellow and red do not come out... has any one experienced the same problem? Is this the blockage thing? Maybe I filled the red and yellow too late?

Thanks.

I am the owner of a Dell all-in-one 962 and I have had the same "incorrect cartridge" messages costing me a lot of money on a printer with very little usage. I paid Dell for tech support, and we did this song and dance, and they sent me new cartriges. Tech support never mentioned expiration dates. The new cartridges then expired before I had barely used them. Does anyone know of anyone having filed suit on this. I am a California Attorney.

I went to Dell's website to purchase new cartridges for my AIO 944 printer. I was prompted for my printer and model number and presented with a few options. I chose an option for three cartridges for $98. I received cartridges that didn't fit my printer. I called Dell three times and they said I need to pay for shipping and returns and maybe will get a credit when they receive it. Then they gave me three different return addresses to send them to. It was their error and they should fix it!

Hi I found this blog very helpful however I am unsure whether it would apply to my Epson C64. HP isn't the only shitty printer manufacturer! Mine suts down when one cartridge is empty. Will the 'swap the cartridges trick because the printer retains a history of cartridge serial numbers' work ? How many cartridges does the C64 it retain? Does this model have a battery too? If so where is it? Can I cover the cartridge contact strip to continue using the cartridge till it actually is empty? I there a website that has tricks for certain printers? So many Q's. Cheers

The simpliest way to fix this is to just do a FULL REST on the printer. Look around on the web (I think the HP service website). It clears all of the printer memory.

On my machine your turn it on while holding the Cancel, Left Arrow, and Enter.

HP 2355. Bought extra cartridges when purchasing the All in one. Tacked the extras on the wall in upright, sealed as new.

Used 2355 very sparingly, took a year to empty black, then refilled with other than HP refill kit. Now out of black. Opened package of new HP cartridges. They are not recognized, no error, no black ink comes out, but there is smear on bottom head of cartridge. Scam-erola, yes?

Dear All I had this problem with an HP. On a different web site blog I found some helpful advice. Remove the internal battery and your problems will be solved! the printer can no longer remember the ink cartridge codes so doesn't block them from working. In my HP, the battery is a flat camera-type thing and I found it inside on the left side at the front. It took some effort to remove, but it is worse to replace, but the printer doesn't seem to need it. The only problem is that it doesn't know the date until the computer tells it. As mine is a fax as well, I think it has problems with redials and dating faxes. If this becomes a problem for you, you can either replace the battery (difficult) or rig up a switch so that you turn the battery off when you replace the cartridge and turn it back on once the cartridge has been accepted. Apparently this works fine. For other printers, I don't know where the battery is. Happy hunting and I hope it works!

I have an HP PSC 2175 printer which indicated there was a problem with the color cartridge. Since I only needed to print using the black cartridge at the time, the suggestion that you 'reset' the printer by pressing the Cancel/Left Arrow/Enter buttons simultaneouly when powering the unit On worked fine. A dump of the printer's memory was printed upon doing this, but now I can print using the black cartridge only.

I came across this trick when I started having problems with my cartridges. Go to the following site and follow the directions to reset your printer to read that cartridge is full (it will work for any refill kit)

www.misterinkjet.com/hp56reset.htm

Before I discovered their deceptive trick with the cartridges I thought it was a problem with the printer. I made a HUGE stink about having to put up a credit card number for collateral and paying for the shipment of a new printer. I got them to send me a new printer and pay the shipping all without putting up a credit card.

Performing a hard reset on the printer.

When the printing unit detects an issue with the cartridge, a software flag is set inside the device. This flag might not reset until a hard reset is performed on the printer.

HP Deskjet and HP Photosmart printers

1.Verify that the printer is turned on.
2.Open the printer and remove both cartridges.
3.Unplug the power cord and other cables from the printer.
4.After 30 seconds, plug the power cord and other cables in to the printer.
5.Open the printer and reinstall both cartridges.
6.Switch the printer on.
7.Print a test page. If the problem persists, replace the cartridge.

HP Officejet and HP PSC all-in-one

1.Verify that the unit is turned on.
2.Remove the power cable from the back of the printer.
3.Wait 30 seconds.
4.Press and hold the POWER button on the front panel.
5.Plug the power cord in to the back of the printer.
6.Print a test page.

the bottom of the cartriges have warranty dates
if for some odd reason it should fail even after a hard or soft reset then they can be replaced
i would much rather reset the cartrige itself but hey

Thanks Todd for the Battery trick. I have HP 5510 All-in-One and WOW it worked like a charm. Although it was very hard to break the battery connection as it was sealed (not soldered) from top and bottom. It had 2 1.5v batteries wrapped in a cover to give a look like a condenser (small mounted cylinders on the circuit board) but if you look closely you will see the + and - sign and yes it is the battery. I just cut the top connection of the batter and connect both the points after cutting with a little thin wire so it can easily come out of the printer from the paper feed tray and join them to make. Now, whenever I'll have the problem I'll split the joint in those wires and join them again.

I had an expired (and refilled) 56 black cartridge and now it is working back again.

I posted all my experience from whatever I got from the top comments and hope you can also workaround through this trick.

I was having a similar problem related to my HP 2175v all-in-one. My cartridges had been depleted for a while. I was using it more for a scanner than a printer. Then, after finally upgrading my computer to XP SP2 (after waiting for a long time to do so) the unit began to give the following error message. "Check right cartridge". I went through the litany of re-installing the program, restarting, uninstalling, scanning boards, reading through HP technical support sites, you know, the whole works. Then I just gave up. I was about to throw the thing through the window before I contacted their "Chat with a technician" option.
This was all after I had found this blog and begun to read over what other users were experiencing with their equipment. So, it was lucky that I had one of their representatives to ask them a key question which some of the above posts have touched upon in relation to the HP Cartridges and the functionality of their products.
They did actually solve my problem, but it is interesting that they also answered some of the questions which appear to have been posed by members of this board.

The following is a transcript of my conversation with the technician. It answers the issue of Scanning with the HP 2175v when the "Check right cartridge" error message is preventing you from using the scanner. Additionally, it proves that HP has loaded their product with a design which facilitates the use of their own products to maintain functionality.

Enjoy.

Alton: Please let me know the error message you are getting while scanning
Mark McGehee: It's telling me to check the right cartridge.
Mark McGehee: It's tieing up the unit and not allowing the scanner to function.
Alton: Since how long are you experiencing this issue?
Mark McGehee: I've re-installed the software, restarted, and done all of the typical maintenance tthat I can think of.
Mark McGehee: About three or four weeks.
Alton: I see...
Mark McGehee: Actually, ever since I finally upgraded my computer to XP SP2
Alton: Are you getting the check cartridge error message on the printer or on the computer ?
Mark McGehee: On the printer...it's flashing on the readout, and all three buttons are flashing.
Alton: Okay
Mark McGehee: Is there some way to reset the printer memory?
Alton: Are you using the Genuine HP ink cartridges ?
Alton: We will try to isolate the issue
Mark McGehee: Well, the ink cartridges are depleted currently. I just want to use the scanner. I use it mostly for scanning.
Alton: Fine
Mark McGehee: I've put them back in, just to see if I can clear the message. That didn't work, by the way.
Alton: In this case we need to replace the ink cartridges. However, we can try scanning using the scanner and camera Wizard
Alton: What operating system do you have installed (Windows 98, Me, Vista or XP)?
Mark McGehee: Windows XP sp2
Alton: Thanks for the information
Mark McGehee: how do I clear the message from the unit?
Alton: I am afraid, Mark. In order to clear the message from the printer we need to replace the cartridges of the All-in-One printer

Mark McGehee: I tried using the HP Director software, and it told me that another program had control of the unit
Mark McGehee: That's bull. I don't want to print. I want to scan.
Alton: Please follow the steps given below to scan normally from computer
Mark McGehee: I had been using the scanner w/o the cartridges for months
Alton: Please try scanning from the below steps to isolate the issue.
1. Verify that the all-in-one product power is turned on and the printer cable is properly connected. 2. Click Start. 3. Click All Programs. 4. Click Accessories. 5. Click Scanner and Camera Wizard. 6. Follow the Scanner and Camera Wizard instructions to scan images to the computer.
ark McGehee: Hey, that's working.
Mark McGehee: i think.
Alton: Great!!!!
Alton: Mark, un less the printer firmware recognize the printer cartridges are damage the printer will scan with out any problem
Mark McGehee: That works.
Alton: Once the printer get recognize that the printer cartridges are expired or damage it will start giving the issue unless the cartridges are replaced
Mark McGehee: So, let me get this straight. I have to replace the depleted cartridges with brand new Hewlett-Packard product cartridges to fully enjoy the features of this product?
Alton: Yes, Mark.
Mark McGehee: Ok.
Mark McGehee: Thanks for solving my problem!
Alton: Are you planning to change the cartridges ?
Alton: You are welcome
Alton: We do have the good options for you
Mark McGehee: Eventually, right now I'm more concerned with getting these images scanned. I'm really glad that there is a workaround.
Alton: We understand the value of your time. Hence we have arranged opportunities to purchase print cartridges directly from HP. Buying directly from HP assures that you receive original HP cartridges that are latest. Free next business day shipping is offered.

Could I help you with this purchase?
Alton: Okay
Mark McGehee: I can't prchase them right now.
Mark McGehee: perhaps later.
Alton: No problem.
Alton: Is there any thing else I can assist you with right away?
Mark McGehee: thanks for the help
Alton: Mark, I appreciate your efforts and cooperation with me to resolve the issue.
Mark McGehee: thanks for the help
Alton: Mark, I appreciate your efforts and cooperation with me to resolve the issue.
Mark McGehee: no problem, thank you.

Do you happen to notice how they were trying to sell me some new cartridges right there?

Before I found this board, I thought it was just related to my upgrade to XP Sp2, but now I'm pretty sure that it's something else completely.

I just now figured it out by the change in the message about 'comments waiting to be moderated.'

I have a Dell 962 All in One and the same thing happened to me. My sister was using the computer and then the printer started displaying the message. I was ticked off b/c I thought she broke it. Now I have to go buy more cartridges. I had just got them re-filled 2 weeks before. This is ridiculous and wrong!!!

HP 5610. You guys hit the nail on the head. I got error messages for both cartridges and they're a week old -- and were working fine all week. The old power off/on trick didn't work, but I did put the old black cartridge back in. No more errors. Not sure why that would clear the color cartridge error, but... The old pair of cartridges was a color HP and b/w Office Depot. Worked fine for months. Same combo with the new pair. I posted this issue on the HP support blog. I'll keep you posted on any replies that actually help. Good luck, friends.

Ok, first off, for all of you complaining about cheap ass non-HP cartridges not working well...duh! HP cartridges are DESIGNED for HP printers, that's why its best to buy them. Cheap imitation crap doesn't work, so why would it here. As for the expiration...has anyone considered the possibility that the INK has an expiration time? Maybe it gets goopy, or runny after too long, and could damage the printer. I think it's a fail-safe issue, not a greedy company issue. I have always been happy with HP printers; i'd never buy anything else.

I am a computer tech. I went to setup a printer for someone who had the printer sitting for longer than 18 months. They never setup the printer before had the same error message. The cartridge was installed but the printer drivers were not. When I did install the drivers, the printer made the same message. Don't think that was a mt cartridge.

HP5510 cartridge C6656A (black)
using Nu-kote refill kit RF196.
First time I refilled a cartridge and reset it to full with tape per Nukote, all OK. Next time I refilled the same good cartridge but HP gave me an error message instead of initializing it, and no black printed on the test. Hard power reset did not work either. I found an older empty cartridge, filled it and it reset to full even without the tape. Thanks

HP7410 here - same thing, "remove and check right cartridge" - interestingly enough, I was able to get into setup, and the clean/align/test pages print like a dream. Resets of any kind don't work. I am now getting ready to do the battery disconnect thing - that seems to be the last measure of choice - has anybody done this on a comparable HP Officejet series printer? Any pictures? Thanks for any info...

I too have the Dell printer and have dealt with this issue since purchasing it 2-1/2 yrs ago. They do replace the ink for free but I end up being on the phone forever with them to get the replacement ink. (They have never tried to charge me to troubleshoot the issue or charge for the refill)
I hate my printer but love my Dimension 9100 computer! The fact that we have McAfee Security Suite for protection has made our experiences positive and totally safe, especially for our small children. The fact that our computer holds up so well through all the abuse of a 4, 7 and 8 year old has to throw at it says a great deal to me.
All this said...I AM ABOUT TO TOSS MY PRINTER INTO THE DUMPSTER! I have had it! There is no solution to fix the problem that I have found and until recently, I was under the impression that we had to go with a Dell printer, that nothing else was compatible. This is what the Walmart guy is trained to say anyway. Perhaps this is why I recently noticed all their Dell computers clearanced?.....LOL!
I will tell y'all what I have discovered about this issue and hopefully you can keep your eyes peeled for the next failure and be able to remedy it before it takes hold.
I have discovered that when we would try to print something from a website or even an email, that this would be the trigger for the error message. If I would catch it right then and shut off the printer and cancel the print, I would find the error message gone when I turned it back on.
It would be when we were copying things from sites with photos usually. I think a bug gets passed along to the printer and by forcing the print you set the issue into place and after doing so it is too late.
I have been told that you can buy a gadget that will reset the ink-jets but have yet to see it sold in Walmart. The refill kits tells you that for some brands you need to buy and use this.
Has anyone else checked into this and if so, does it work? Where can I buy one?
My printer is a wonderful printer when it is working. It is when my husband and children go to printing that we get into trouble. If you will monitor "HOW"your printer is being used at the time of error and try what I said, I believe you will find there is some truth to what I am sharing here.
The key is not to be careless in your printing and monitor the process as it is going forth. USE GREAT CAUTION when printing things from sites, even if you are pasting. Unless it is critical, NEVER PRINT EMAILS! If you need copies of the wording try pasting to WORD and removing all pictures. I do not know what causes the issue, and not all websites are affected. You just need to use caution and if you see an error pop up on your printer, SHUT IT OFF!!! Cancel the print and figure how to go your print a safer way. Once it is forced to print you can kiss your ink-jet bye-bye!

Today I went and bought a new printer at Walmart as we needed one today to complete a project for my son for school. We did not have the time to wait for Dell and quite honestly, i wanted a backup solution that would get us by if need be.
After reading some of the things about other brands of printers I decided i did not have time to shop for quality and opted for something I thought might not create more headaches.
I drove to Walmart and guess what their major brands are?.... HP's! Well no way was I going to buy another headache if I could avoid it and after reading and studying the printers they sold I found the Kodak printer was $30.00 off! It also was cost effective, meaning that the ink costs less and I could save a lot of money on printing both photos and other printings! The box said 50 percent savings on ink!
Well I am happy to report that the ink sets cost less than 23 dollars for both color and black, and the printer works so great! My husband works for Bell Helicopter and by the time I got home he had ran to work and used work printers to complete my son's project. (He did not know I was going to get this printer).
The comparison was very close and I also printed photos with my new printer. They turned out better than if I had them done and better than the Dell did! I am totally sold! Also, it took only moments to connect the new printer and it is so easy to work!
If you want a great little printer/scanner check into the Kodak at Walmart. it is less than a hundred dollars and is set up to handle photo paper separate from regular paper. You do not have to do anything except keep all papers of both loaded and print!
So I lost my fax, but i never used it anyway and this way Dell will not get another dime of our hard earned money for their overly expensive ink refills that never give us our monies worth! now I pay 22 dollars and have both refills!
Whatever took me so long...?

Sollution for "Right Cartridge Incorrect" on Dell AIO 962, and possibly many other printers.

Annoyed as the rest of you with this built-in cartridge analyzer "feature", I've been tinkering around. Why all the complaints? Because the printer rejects your cartridge (even OEM ones) when it "expires", even if almost brand new and still full of quality ink, so you can fork out an unnecessarily large wad of cash to get another cartridge (which won't last long before you have to do it again.) First I want to say the company are a lot of n00bs for installing this feature. And I wouldn't be using this brand-new Dell printer if I hadn't got it free from someone who dumped it from similar aggrivation.

Getting on with it. It is the Dell AIO 962. I put non-OEM cartridges inside that i found on eBay. They worked great for a few weeks and then the printer gave me the message "Right Cartridge Error." Got online, read all the other annoyed people's quotes, and decided I wouldn't take no for an answer. Thankfully it wasn't too hard to skip right over the top of this annoying trap.

I considered the battery-removal idea, but decided to try something else first. On the face of the cartridge i covered the two bottom-left-most squares (for communication between printer and cartridge) with some reflective silver tape. Probably doesn't matter what kind of tape you use as long as it's not clear. Up to this point the printer wouldn't let me do much of anything, but now, the message has changed after reinstalling this right-side cartridge. Instead of the old message, i get "Right Cartridge Missing" or something to that effect. Hmm! I print a color graphic and some black and white text. I get a computer software message about the cartridge missing. I hit continue. I get another message about communication failure. I hit continue. It prints. It prints... It prints so beautifully.

Dell are = n00bs. But they already know that.

(P.S. If you take it out and put it back in after covering these squares, the old message may return. Try covering the two squares on the opposite side, bottom-right-most.) Squares are stacked, not side-by-side, like this :

HP psc 1210 all in one.cartridge 56.
after refilling,it was rejected by showing error.
i only had two cartridges to play with, one would be accepted, the other not.
after trying all sorts of funny things, changing pc year, disconecting, reloading sofware. none of which worked i did following:
1: DISCONNECTED POWER FROM PRINTER
2: OPENED LID TO CARTRIDGES. AT THIS POINT THE CARTRIDGE SLEDGE IS PARKED IN THE LEFTHAND SIDE.
AND THE CARTRIDGE IN PLACE, IS ONE WHICH IS WORKING AND HAS JUST BEEN PRINTED WITH.
3: PULL THE CARTRIDGES CARFULLY INTO VIEW MANUALY.
4: TAKE OUT THE GOOD CARTRIDGE AND REPLACE IT WITH THE REJECTED CARTRIDGE.
5: CLOSE THE LID AND PLUG POWER IN AGAIN
6: BINGO! AFTER SOME BACKWARDS AND FORWARDS SLEDGE MOVEMENT, IT PRINTED A TEST PAGE, WITH THE BEFORE REJECTED CARTIDGE.

Wish i could understand Scottie's cryptic message. Some operative conjunctions appear to be missing in the message.
"I just kept trying all and any combo buttons [1] during power button power cycle [2] and cancel(x)[3] and Checkmark [4] while power up reset the damn thing! Whalaa!"
[1] Combinations of buttons (?)(and if so which ones) or is he trying a "combo" button, and if so what or which ones are those?
[2] What is the power button power cycle [?]
[3] "and cancel" I assume means in some previously described state of printer turning on ? one presses the cancel button ?
[4] "and Checkmark" suggests now that the check button and the cancel button are pressed simultaneously during powering on state of printer.
Am i close to deciphering this message?
Does Scottie mean to say (as logic indicates he means) "I just tried any combinations of buttons when the printer was powering on and found that pressing the check button simultaneously with the cancel button as the printer was powering on reset the printer"?

Tried what i could interpret from Scottie's cryptic message re Dell's AIO 948 non-Dell cartridge rejection/blocking of printer operation problem, but i have had no success. Possibly a clearer explanation from anyone, especially of the time to press the two buttons, check and cancel, in what powering on state of the printer and/or are the two buttons pressed in a sequence rather than simultaneously?

And I am very pissed of about this because the cartidge was almoust full!!! And I don`t want to spend another 20$ for only a part of the ink. Since I payed for it, well it`s my right to use it when I want abd how often... And another thing: the recycle thing - can`t use it because in Romania (where I do live) there is NO recycling point! That`s GREAT! Just great...

I had this EXACT same problem. First the printer would go through the process as if it was printing, but papers came out blank. I knew I had at least 20% ink capacity left because the graph showed it to be so, and the machine said I had 22 or more copies I could do. I took the cartridges out and shook them, then replaced them. Then I got that message that I was not using a Dell Cartridge! No matter how many times I restarted my computer; unplugged and plugged it, nothing worked. Like you I cleaned out the printer (though I am very careful to always keep it very clean), and made sure none of the contact points from cartridges to printer were damaged. Nothing. I even deleted the Dell AIO Printer 962 program and tried to re-install it using the CD-Roms that came with it, and to my surprise, now I can't even re-install the program because a quarter of the way through the process, the machine keeps telling me I have the incorrect cartridge installed on the right side! Kill! Arrrrrgggggghhhhh! I think that it is both programmed to have an expiration date, AND to reject the cartridge if you EVER remove it to shake it, or attempt to re-inject it with ink!

I have a HP C4180. I hate it. When it was new it worked fine, then I made the mistake of leaving it at home when I went on holiday for two weeks. When I returned, the printer was upset and said that my colour cartridge was not installed correctly. Eventually after trying to clean it with a cotton but, then a mop, then the dishwasher, I bought a new one. I have just installed it and now the little b*st*rd is saying that the right hand cartridge (the good black one) is not supported!

It's late and I'm probably over-reacting but I am going to put an axe in it!
