Error: Right cartridge incorrect. Printer Manufacturers' trap?!
I purchased a HP color inkjet printer over a year ago. It is one of the all-in-one models. I barely used it for printing, mainly for scanning and ocassionaly for photo copying. Yesterday, I turned it on and tried to print something, it gave me an error message: "Error: Right cartridge incorrect." After a few reboot of the printer, the message doesn't go away, and it blocks all printing and photo-copying tasks. I then called HP support line and they were going to charge me $30 for the support call but I told them I can spend extra $20 to buy another printer, and the support staff paused for a few second and suggested me TO DO SO! Anyway, I then tried to clean the printer from inside out, Air-brushed every inch of the machine, cotton cleaned (with alcohol) the cartridge connecting heads and electronic clips. But nothing helped. I then turned to the Internet...
Surprisingly, many others have had the same experience as me and they have come to some shocking conclusion after hours of research and discussion with the printer manufacturers:
Many newer HP Printers internally keep track of your cartridges by a serial number embedded into the cartridge. When it's low, the printer remembers. This is entirely done within the printer itself, and not the printer software. Some printers EXPIRE the cartridges after 18 months according to the installation date even it is not empty.
I find this is outrageous, it's like buy a pen and it won't let you use it after 1 month even the ink is still half full?! If this is true, there should some serious polices to prevent the manufacturers from doing so. An alternative solution I have found so far is:
Most HP printers will only keep 2 cartridges in memory, so if you have 2 extra cartridges, (even empty ones) you could cycle them through to reset the printers memory, and reset the ink level to full. Basically, even though you've refilled your cartridge, the printers has the cartridge's serial number stored in memory. This will reset it.
I will give this a try, but it still needs me to go out and purchase a brand new HP #56 black cartridge while the original one is not empty yet... If you have any experiences like this, please share it with me.

Smith and Roberson’s Business Law, ninth edition. West Publishing. Chapter 43; ANTITRUST.
“Characterizing a type of restraint as per se illegal therefore has a significant effect on the prosecution of an antitrust suit. In such a case, the plaintiff need only show that the type of restraint occurred, she does not need to prove that the restraint limited competition.....Tying arrangements. A tying arrangement occurs when the seller of a product, service, or intangible (the "tying" product) conditions its sale on the buyers purchasing a second product, service, or intangible (the "tied" product) from the seller....Because tying arrangements limit buyers' freedom of choice and may exclude competitors, the law closely scrutinizes such agreements.”
Hewlett Packard has, unbeknownst to customers who purchased HP printers (tying product), tied as a condition, the purchase of new HP ink cartridges (tied product), or HP recycled ink cartridges, through the use illegal anti-competitive consumer practices.
Again, I say Hewlett Packard, play your silly games by cheating on ink cost, and supplies. I say go ahead! But don’t stop me from the use of my printer.
If anyone DOES file a class action on this one, I'll be in line with the rest of you. This practice must be stopped.
i got the same experience, error with you guys.. and now i got the idea i will try to do wat u did.. thanks so much!
those cartridges are real wallet-breakers, and I need to use a lot of ink for printing out hardcopies of computer code, and it's not in my budget to buy cartridges all the time!
I was forced to fall back onto these HP printers when my Epson printer stopped working. That Epson was wonderful! Beautiful, refillable, pure bliss! Why can't HP's be like that? Because the company makes its profits selling the cartridges! Okay, ahem, sorry for that brain fart, but I had to get that out of the way. I'll have to try the tricks to use the same cartridge until I get a couple of fins to buy either a replacement Epson or the extra cartridges to do the swap trick.
Canon Pixma MP830 Office All-In-One ($280 US) and is pretty happy about it. I am not a "all-in-one" type of guy, so I would vote for Epson Stylus CX4600. It's around $150 US but I have read good reviews on it. Good luck with the printer hunting!
Still the HP ink cartridge thing, I have PSC2510, the color ink ran out, refilled them with the refill kit, did all the tricks, it is fine now as the ink level, printer software does see the ink level is full... but when print, only black and blue color came out, yellow and red do not come out... has any one experienced the same problem? Is this the blockage thing? Maybe I filled the red and yellow too late?
Thanks.
On my machine your turn it on while holding the Cancel, Left Arrow, and Enter.
Used 2355 very sparingly, took a year to empty black, then refilled with other than HP refill kit. Now out of black. Opened package of new HP cartridges. They are not recognized, no error, no black ink comes out, but there is smear on bottom head of cartridge. Scam-erola, yes?
Even a brand new 57 Colour did not solve the problem. It now just tells me to "check the cartridges"
Annoying beyond belief!
I agree w/ everyone. What a pain in the A _ _ ! How do I reset or take the battery out of my 942 Dell Printer so y color works?
The black works fine now, but I keep getting the error code on the color and it won't print ANY color..arrrggggggg!
does the dell 962 not accept refurbished ink cartridges?

Before I discovered their deceptive trick with the cartridges I thought it was a problem with the printer. I made a HUGE stink about having to put up a credit card number for collateral and paying for the shipment of a new printer. I got them to send me a new printer and pay the shipping all without putting up a credit card.
Performing a hard reset on the printer.
When the printing unit detects an issue with the cartridge, a software flag is set inside the device. This flag might not reset until a hard reset is performed on the printer.
HP Deskjet and HP Photosmart printers
1.Verify that the printer is turned on.
2.Open the printer and remove both cartridges.
3.Unplug the power cord and other cables from the printer.
4.After 30 seconds, plug the power cord and other cables in to the printer.
5.Open the printer and reinstall both cartridges.
6.Switch the printer on.
7.Print a test page. If the problem persists, replace the cartridge.
HP Officejet and HP PSC all-in-one
1.Verify that the unit is turned on.
2.Remove the power cable from the back of the printer.
3.Wait 30 seconds.
4.Press and hold the POWER button on the front panel.
5.Plug the power cord in to the back of the printer.
6.Print a test page.
hp is sending me a replacement cartrige
i decided to chat with them and they concluded that my cartridge went bad
even though i refilled it i will get a new one in 4 days
kinda sux cuz i have to wait
the bottom of the cartriges have warranty dates
if for some odd reason it should fail even after a hard or soft reset then they can be replaced
i would much rather reset the cartrige itself but hey
this is better than nothing
somehow i forsee 5 more catriges being replace
call it intuition
Heruk
thanks,
Same error.
Same outcome.
Just a way for HP to make some extra cash; thank you for the online advice.
I had an expired (and refilled) 56 black cartridge and now it is working back again.
I posted all my experience from whatever I got from the top comments and hope you can also workaround through this trick.
This was all after I had found this blog and begun to read over what other users were experiencing with their equipment. So, it was lucky that I had one of their representatives to ask them a key question which some of the above posts have touched upon in relation to the HP Cartridges and the functionality of their products.
They did actually solve my problem, but it is interesting that they also answered some of the questions which appear to have been posed by members of this board.
The following is a transcript of my conversation with the technician. It answers the issue of Scanning with the HP 2175v when the "Check right cartridge" error message is preventing you from using the scanner. Additionally, it proves that HP has loaded their product with a design which facilitates the use of their own products to maintain functionality.
Enjoy.
Alton: Please let me know the error message you are getting while scanning
Mark McGehee: It's telling me to check the right cartridge.
Mark McGehee: It's tieing up the unit and not allowing the scanner to function.
Alton: Since how long are you experiencing this issue?
Mark McGehee: I've re-installed the software, restarted, and done all of the typical maintenance tthat I can think of.
Mark McGehee: About three or four weeks.
Alton: I see...
Mark McGehee: Actually, ever since I finally upgraded my computer to XP SP2
Alton: Are you getting the check cartridge error message on the printer or on the computer ?
Mark McGehee: On the printer...it's flashing on the readout, and all three buttons are flashing.
Alton: Okay
Mark McGehee: Is there some way to reset the printer memory?
Alton: Are you using the Genuine HP ink cartridges ?
Alton: We will try to isolate the issue
Mark McGehee: Well, the ink cartridges are depleted currently. I just want to use the scanner. I use it mostly for scanning.
Alton: Fine
Mark McGehee: I've put them back in, just to see if I can clear the message. That didn't work, by the way.
Alton: In this case we need to replace the ink cartridges. However, we can try scanning using the scanner and camera Wizard
Alton: What operating system do you have installed (Windows 98, Me, Vista or XP)?
Mark McGehee: Windows XP sp2
Alton: Thanks for the information
Mark McGehee: how do I clear the message from the unit?
Alton: I am afraid, Mark. In order to clear the message from the printer we need to replace the cartridges of the All-in-One printer
Mark McGehee: I tried using the HP Director software, and it told me that another program had control of the unit
Mark McGehee: That's bull. I don't want to print. I want to scan.
Alton: Please follow the steps given below to scan normally from computer
Mark McGehee: I had been using the scanner w/o the cartridges for months
Alton: Please try scanning from the below steps to isolate the issue.
1. Verify that the all-in-one product power is turned on and the printer cable is properly connected. 2. Click Start. 3. Click All Programs. 4. Click Accessories. 5. Click Scanner and Camera Wizard. 6. Follow the Scanner and Camera Wizard instructions to scan images to the computer.ark McGehee: Hey, that's working.
Mark McGehee: i think.
Alton: Great!!!!
Alton: Mark, un less the printer firmware recognize the printer cartridges are damage the printer will scan with out any problem
Mark McGehee: That works.
Alton: Once the printer get recognize that the printer cartridges are expired or damage it will start giving the issue unless the cartridges are replaced
Mark McGehee: So, let me get this straight. I have to replace the depleted cartridges with brand new Hewlett-Packard product cartridges to fully enjoy the features of this product?
Alton: Yes, Mark.
Mark McGehee: Ok.
Mark McGehee: Thanks for solving my problem!
Alton: Are you planning to change the cartridges ?
Alton: You are welcome
Alton: We do have the good options for you
Mark McGehee: Eventually, right now I'm more concerned with getting these images scanned. I'm really glad that there is a workaround.
Alton: We understand the value of your time. Hence we have arranged opportunities to purchase print cartridges directly from HP. Buying directly from HP assures that you receive original HP cartridges that are latest. Free next business day shipping is offered.
Could I help you with this purchase?
Alton: Okay
Mark McGehee: I can't prchase them right now.
Mark McGehee: perhaps later.
Alton: No problem.
Alton: Is there any thing else I can assist you with right away?
Mark McGehee: thanks for the help
Alton: Mark, I appreciate your efforts and cooperation with me to resolve the issue.
Mark McGehee: thanks for the help
Alton: Mark, I appreciate your efforts and cooperation with me to resolve the issue.
Mark McGehee: no problem, thank you.
Do you happen to notice how they were trying to sell me some new cartridges right there?
Before I found this board, I thought it was just related to my upgrade to XP Sp2, but now I'm pretty sure that it's something else completely.
I just now figured it out by the change in the message about 'comments waiting to be moderated.'
Thanks man.
Mark
using Nu-kote refill kit RF196.
First time I refilled a cartridge and reset it to full with tape per Nukote, all OK. Next time I refilled the same good cartridge but HP gave me an error message instead of initializing it, and no black printed on the test. Hard power reset did not work either. I found an older empty cartridge, filled it and it reset to full even without the tape. Thanks
I hate my printer but love my Dimension 9100 computer! The fact that we have McAfee Security Suite for protection has made our experiences positive and totally safe, especially for our small children. The fact that our computer holds up so well through all the abuse of a 4, 7 and 8 year old has to throw at it says a great deal to me.
All this said...I AM ABOUT TO TOSS MY PRINTER INTO THE DUMPSTER! I have had it! There is no solution to fix the problem that I have found and until recently, I was under the impression that we had to go with a Dell printer, that nothing else was compatible. This is what the Walmart guy is trained to say anyway. Perhaps this is why I recently noticed all their Dell computers clearanced?.....LOL!
I will tell y'all what I have discovered about this issue and hopefully you can keep your eyes peeled for the next failure and be able to remedy it before it takes hold.
I have discovered that when we would try to print something from a website or even an email, that this would be the trigger for the error message. If I would catch it right then and shut off the printer and cancel the print, I would find the error message gone when I turned it back on.
It would be when we were copying things from sites with photos usually. I think a bug gets passed along to the printer and by forcing the print you set the issue into place and after doing so it is too late.
I have been told that you can buy a gadget that will reset the ink-jets but have yet to see it sold in Walmart. The refill kits tells you that for some brands you need to buy and use this.
Has anyone else checked into this and if so, does it work? Where can I buy one?
My printer is a wonderful printer when it is working. It is when my husband and children go to printing that we get into trouble. If you will monitor "HOW"your printer is being used at the time of error and try what I said, I believe you will find there is some truth to what I am sharing here.
The key is not to be careless in your printing and monitor the process as it is going forth. USE GREAT CAUTION when printing things from sites, even if you are pasting. Unless it is critical, NEVER PRINT EMAILS! If you need copies of the wording try pasting to WORD and removing all pictures. I do not know what causes the issue, and not all websites are affected. You just need to use caution and if you see an error pop up on your printer, SHUT IT OFF!!! Cancel the print and figure how to go your print a safer way. Once it is forced to print you can kiss your ink-jet bye-bye!
After reading some of the things about other brands of printers I decided i did not have time to shop for quality and opted for something I thought might not create more headaches.
I drove to Walmart and guess what their major brands are?.... HP's! Well no way was I going to buy another headache if I could avoid it and after reading and studying the printers they sold I found the Kodak printer was $30.00 off! It also was cost effective, meaning that the ink costs less and I could save a lot of money on printing both photos and other printings! The box said 50 percent savings on ink!
Well I am happy to report that the ink sets cost less than 23 dollars for both color and black, and the printer works so great! My husband works for Bell Helicopter and by the time I got home he had ran to work and used work printers to complete my son's project. (He did not know I was going to get this printer).
The comparison was very close and I also printed photos with my new printer. They turned out better than if I had them done and better than the Dell did! I am totally sold! Also, it took only moments to connect the new printer and it is so easy to work!
If you want a great little printer/scanner check into the Kodak at Walmart. it is less than a hundred dollars and is set up to handle photo paper separate from regular paper. You do not have to do anything except keep all papers of both loaded and print!
So I lost my fax, but i never used it anyway and this way Dell will not get another dime of our hard earned money for their overly expensive ink refills that never give us our monies worth! now I pay 22 dollars and have both refills!
Whatever took me so long...?
"Full Rest".
Following his lead, I just tried holding "cancel" and the power button down for several seconds and the memory was wiped out! Now my HP Deskjet F4140 thinks the cartridges I just refilled are brand new! Exactly what I was hoping for.
Thanks so much!
problem, i tried to clean the cartridge and printer heads(gold pins on flex cable),it will work for copying but i tried to run the maintenance programs or print and it will fail again,
I went to Inksell
bought a remanufactured for 15.00 plus tax,and it fix the problem,I put the original back in the printer it fail again,i took the original back to Inksell, they ran a test on it(at no charge)they said it was ok. I installed it back on the printer and it works, ran the alignment and clean the cartridge programs and is working fine.
I reached this page while search for this error message.
"Error: Right cartridge incorrect."
Me too feel that your observations are correct. I'll try carlos's method.
Annoyed as the rest of you with this built-in cartridge analyzer "feature", I've been tinkering around. Why all the complaints? Because the printer rejects your cartridge (even OEM ones) when it "expires", even if almost brand new and still full of quality ink, so you can fork out an unnecessarily large wad of cash to get another cartridge (which won't last long before you have to do it again.) First I want to say the company are a lot of n00bs for installing this feature. And I wouldn't be using this brand-new Dell printer if I hadn't got it free from someone who dumped it from similar aggrivation.
Getting on with it. It is the Dell AIO 962. I put non-OEM cartridges inside that i found on eBay. They worked great for a few weeks and then the printer gave me the message "Right Cartridge Error." Got online, read all the other annoyed people's quotes, and decided I wouldn't take no for an answer. Thankfully it wasn't too hard to skip right over the top of this annoying trap.
I considered the battery-removal idea, but decided to try something else first. On the face of the cartridge i covered the two bottom-left-most squares (for communication between printer and cartridge) with some reflective silver tape. Probably doesn't matter what kind of tape you use as long as it's not clear. Up to this point the printer wouldn't let me do much of anything, but now, the message has changed after reinstalling this right-side cartridge. Instead of the old message, i get "Right Cartridge Missing" or something to that effect. Hmm! I print a color graphic and some black and white text. I get a computer software message about the cartridge missing. I hit continue. I get another message about communication failure. I hit continue. It prints. It prints... It prints so beautifully.
Dell are = n00bs. But they already know that.
(P.S. If you take it out and put it back in after covering these squares, the old message may return. Try covering the two squares on the opposite side, bottom-right-most.) Squares are stacked, not side-by-side, like this :

after refilling,it was rejected by showing error.
i only had two cartridges to play with, one would be accepted, the other not.
after trying all sorts of funny things, changing pc year, disconecting, reloading sofware. none of which worked i did following:
1: DISCONNECTED POWER FROM PRINTER
2: OPENED LID TO CARTRIDGES. AT THIS POINT THE CARTRIDGE SLEDGE IS PARKED IN THE LEFTHAND SIDE.
AND THE CARTRIDGE IN PLACE, IS ONE WHICH IS WORKING AND HAS JUST BEEN PRINTED WITH.
3: PULL THE CARTRIDGES CARFULLY INTO VIEW MANUALY.
4: TAKE OUT THE GOOD CARTRIDGE AND REPLACE IT WITH THE REJECTED CARTRIDGE.
5: CLOSE THE LID AND PLUG POWER IN AGAIN
6: BINGO! AFTER SOME BACKWARDS AND FORWARDS SLEDGE MOVEMENT, IT PRINTED A TEST PAGE, WITH THE BEFORE REJECTED CARTIDGE.
Sollution for "Right Cartridge Incorrect" on Dell AIO 962, and possibly many other printers.
Danny, I love ya!
Covered both corners with sticky label and now works!
"I just kept trying all and any combo buttons [1] during power button power cycle [2] and cancel(x)[3] and Checkmark [4] while power up reset the damn thing! Whalaa!"
[1] Combinations of buttons (?)(and if so which ones) or is he trying a "combo" button, and if so what or which ones are those?
[2] What is the power button power cycle [?]
[3] "and cancel" I assume means in some previously described state of printer turning on ? one presses the cancel button ?
[4] "and Checkmark" suggests now that the check button and the cancel button are pressed simultaneously during powering on state of printer.
Am i close to deciphering this message?
Does Scottie mean to say (as logic indicates he means) "I just tried any combinations of buttons when the printer was powering on and found that pressing the check button simultaneously with the cancel button as the printer was powering on reset the printer"?
Tech support were nice to me and all, but this is the second time that they send me replacement cartridges, I still have the "Right Cartridge Error" message.
My last roommate had an HP printer that worked perfectly. No more Dell printers for me, ever!
Thanks for this blog man I appreciate it!
It's late and I'm probably over-reacting but I am going to put an axe in it!
http://www.misterinkjet.com/hp56reset.htm
So i have put two pieces of tape on the contacts as indicated and in the order indicated. There is a picture so it is easy. At the third step i took the tape off. My printer behave strangely but in the end it worked and that is all we are asking for! Yeah...
I also have a Hp PSC 2175 and I have tried EVERY step on the internet and contacted HP chat 2 times to resolve this. My error message is:
Error: Right cartridge is incorrect
Tried covering the contacts, flashing firmware etc but to no avil. only options remain are to buy Brand new cartridges from HP or to reseat the cmos battery, I have no idea where it is!
Anyway, my psc 2175 is a let down and im appauled that they have digital expirey dates set to cartridge serial numbers. Its too controling.
Good luck to anyone with the same problem as I sure as hell dont think ill be fixing this one!
I would like to put some pressure on these manaufactures to address these underhand practices. I am interested to hear any legal views on this, for example, they never tell the customer at any time about this automatic cut off of the cartridges, surely this is against consumer law? The other matter is that is not possible (to the best of my knowledge) to use generic, and presumably chaeper, cartridges, is this not restraint of trade? Barrier to entry?
