Beijing Olympic Tickets Registration Surged to 250000 In One Day
According to the formal Beijing Olympic ticket center, over 50000 people successfully submitted their registrations through the web site (www.tickets.beijing2008.cn). The overall traffic to the web site in the past 24 hours have exceeded 1 million. The overall tickets requests reach 250000 (most registrations are requesting for multiple tickets). The officials emphasized on the fact that phase 1 is only a "lottery" process which means "Whether you submit your application early or on the last day, you will have an equal chance of securing tickets." So, take your time and plan well for your trip if you are traveling to Beijing.

Hello from Atlanta, Georgia!
I'm planning a trip to China in September & found your blog while looking online for information.
I have 2 weeks to spend in China and am open to any suggestions you may have on where to visit. The plan right now is to spend 6 days in Beijing, 6 days in Shanghai.
I'd also be interested in hiring a local guide since I don't know Mandarin. Any suggestions on the best way to do this?
Thanks so much for any advice!
Laura
Sorry for the delayed response. Just came back from a trip myself. It’s exciting to know about your trip. Other than the guides from the lonelyplanet.com, here are lists of sites you MUST see in the two cities:
Beijing:
Forbidden City, Drum Tower, Tiananmen Square and Temple of Heaven can be packed in one day. They are pretty close together.
Lama Temple (A must see, you get a good sense of the religion in Tibet without traveling to there)
Summer Palace (Quite far from the downtown, but within BJ city parameter, really close to Beijing University and Tsinghua university, may need a day)
The Great Wall, Ming Tomb (all one day, you might want to consider hiring a taxi driver – 500RMB / day)
Shopping Shopping, Shopping (Panjiayuan Market, Pearl Market, Sanlitun Yashou Clothing Market)
Night Entertainment: Sanlitun Bar District, Houhai Bar District (a new but must see area, around a man made lake, beautiful)
Shanghai:
Huangpu River Cruise + Waitan (Huangpu River West Side, very nice architectures from 1930th) + Nanjing Street (only walking no cars allowed, a huge shopping district)
Jade Buddha Temple (In Jing An, very nice)
Shanghai Art Museum (good collection), Taikang Lu Art Centre
Yuyuan Gardens and Bazaar (a must see, old Shanghai, Chinese: “Cheng Huang Miao”, really cool shops and food etc. It was renovating when I was there in January 2007)
Shopping Shopping Shopping (Almost everywhere, but Nanjing Street and Huai Hai Street and Xu Jia Hui are the more crowded areas)
Hope this gives you some idea. You should find most of these places on lonelyplanet. Let me know if you need more information. Good luck and have fun!
